It can be overwhelming to shop for the right shoe for your activity because there are so many options, from running and walking shoes to cross trainers and sport-specific shoes. How do you know you are selecting the right shoe for your feet as well as your activity of choice?

Part of the trick to buying the right shoe is to fully understand what each shoe will do for you. These brief descriptions of different shoe technologies will hopefully make your next trip to the store a more informed experience.

Walking shoes are flexible at the toes. Because you roll from heel to toe when you walk, you should be able to bend and flex the shoe at the toes and the heel should be level with the front of the shoe to accommodate the body mechanics of walking. As a result, walking shoes are not suited for other types of activity. Lightweight performance trainers are great all-around walking shoes for those who don't need motion control. If you walk very long distances, a cushioned shoe might be more comfortable. Stability shoes are for people who do not have severe motion control problems, but who want a stable and durable shoe.

Cross trainers are designed for surfaces off the road or on a treadmill. Made to offer excellent grip and stability, cross trainers are great multipurpose shoes. Cross trainers are a responsive shoe – lower to the ground – which decreases the risk of injury as there is less chance of going over on your ankle during an activity. Due to their durable design, these shoes tend to be heavier than most athletic shoes. Most cross trainers have a wider outsole than running or walking shoes, which contributes to their excellent stability for side-to-side motion.

Running shoes are designed for forward movement with their deep heel and thinner sole in the toe area. There are three categories of shoes that correspond to foot types: motion control, stability and cushioning shoes. When you are buying a new running shoe, it is important to know that motion-control shoes are made for those whose feet roll inwardly (over-pronators), as they are firm and support the feet, keeping them upright.

Stability shoes are firm but also offer a wider range of support for those who have varying degrees of over-pronation. Finally, cushioning shoes are meant for those who are supinators or who tend to roll their feet outward. These shoes simply provide a lot of cushioning and do not provide any corrective support.

Sport-specific shoes are designed for playing basketball, soccer or tennis and as a result are created to accommodate the special requirements for those sports. It is best not to try to play soccer with a basketball shoe, for example, because you may hurt your foot or ankle. You may wish to consider visiting a specialty store where you may find a wider variety of shoes and staff who may be better prepared to answer your questions.



Of course, there is no one perfect shoe. The best shoe for you is one that fits, gives you the proper support, flexibility and cushioning. Here are some tips to making the choice easier.

Shop late in the day, when your feet are slightly swollen, so the shoe will fit you well throughout the day.
Measure your foot while standing.
If you wear an orthotic shoe insert, bring it to the shoe store. Only buy shoes that easily fit your orthotic.
Try on both shoes with the socks you will wear when being active.
Allow for a thumbnail's width between the shoe and your big toe.
Make sure your heel is snug and does not slide out of the shoe when you walk.
Choose shoes that are comfortable immediately. If they hurt in the store, do not buy them.
Look for moderately priced shoes. Price is not necessarily an indication of quality.
Wear your new shoes around the house for a few days before incorporating them into your physical activity routine.
Consider getting an evaluation by a doctor, physiotherapist or podiatrist to learn your foot type before buying a pair of shoes.

Distance

Playing Level

Most people feel that high-spin balls appeal only to pros that need precision on iron shots. But a senior or woman who has trouble reaching a par-4 in two shots will appreciate the control offered by a performance ball after the 3rd shot.
Some balls are designed for slower swing speeds with a lightweight construction that catches air. They are generally marketed for women or seniors, but don't let labels fool you. Plenty of men play these balls because, for them, it yields the most distance.

Soccer Cleats A No-Slip Solution

Your Child Should Have Soccer Cleats

A bold statement. Let me qualify that assertion.

First of all, as I stated on the Equipment for Soccer Page, soccer shoes or cleats are not a requirement of FIFA. I recommend them because I have seen some bad spills on wet grass and muddy fields.
Tennis shoes simply don’t get the job done when your child is playing in less than perfect conditions.

Trust me. Your child will play on some very wet and muddy fields. Well, unless you are playing indoor soccer.
Of course you should refer to the local soccer league rules. They may require cleats.

Second, my approach to this is as a frugal parent. I know you can't believe it but it's true.

You can’t play soccer in baseball cleats but you can play baseball in soccer cleats.
This is what I have done in the past with my son & what I recommend for U8 or younger players.
(Actually if you don’t mind cutting on a shoe you can make a baseball cleat acceptable by cutting off the toe cleat.)

Hopefully by the U10 or U12 level your child will be over the baseball fetish & will devote his/her time completely to soccer. Right?

A good pair of cleats IS important, but not critical. After all, soccer is about using your foot, right? You should purchase a good, solid pair of shoes. Soccer shoes are also designed to give a person better feel and control of the ball whereas tennis shoes frequently have bulky laces and tongues.

As equipment for soccer goes, cleats can be relatively expensive. Check your local discount stores first. There is no need to buy the best soccer shoes until your child can wear them for more than one year OR unless they will be getting serious use out of them on a travel team.

Resemble low-cut, lightweight sneakers. Designed for playing indoor soccer in a gym or recreational facility
Feature a flat, rubbery-type bottom for better traction on indoor courts and fields
Required by many indoor soccer facilities when playing on artificial turf, so the turf does not get torn up

Sandals

An important footwear add-on for all soccer players
Worn before the game to save wear on your soccer shoes
Easy to slip on and off when soccer socks and shin guards are on
Allow you to immediately remove your playing shoes after a game to rest your feet
Many sandals have special massage-type features for the bottom of the foot for added comfort

Materials

Soccer shoes come in two basic materials: leather and synthetic. The pair you purchase will largely depend on your skill level and how serious you are about the sport.

Leather

Offer the best feel and fit of any soccer shoe, but are also generally more expensive
Full-grain leather shoes are strong and durable, while variations such as Kangaroo leather are more flexible and offer an even beter feel
The softer the leather, the better the feel for the ball, but also the less durable
the shoe
Absorb more water than synthetic shoes and are not recommended for constant use on wet fields; however, water treatment options are available

Synthetic

Ideal for most entry and mid-level players
Generally less expensive than leather shoes, but do not offer as good a feel and do not last as long as a well-cared for leather boot
Generally contain some sort of water treatment and therefore last better under poor playing conditions
Easier to clean and dry out than leather shoes

THE EQUIPMENT FOR SOCCER REQUIRED BY THE FIFA IS:

- a jersey or shirt
- shorts
- stockings
- shinguards
- footwear

Most youth recreational soccer leagues will provide everything but the shinguards and the footwear.

Shinguards

According to FIFA, shinguards should be "made of a suitable material (rubber, plastic, or similar substance), and provide a reasonable degree of protection. This leaves a lot of wiggle room!

This one piece of equipment for soccer could determine the well-being & safety of your child!

What kind of shinguards should I buy?

Here are some pointers based on my experience.

The basic, cheap shinguards with one velcro strap provide basic protection but are not great. I will say that they are adequate under many circumstances. (but I don't buy them anymore) Here is an example of one:



Do you want just adequate? After buying my oldest son better shinguards, I will never buy the cheap ones again. He has seen a tremendous difference and I spent a whole whopping $4 or so more. Here is a picture of them.



There are two major improvements on these shinguards versus the cheap ones.

First, the shinguards attach with 2 wide straps, not just one. When he puts it on, the shinguard stays.

Second, these shinguards come with ankleguards or protectors. Look at the picture.

In the younger ages the kids scuffle all the time so I highly recommend soccer shinguards that also supply ankle protection or buy the ankleguards separately.
